The experienced staff of Coquille Valley Hospital offer you a range of educational services that help you make more informed healthcare choices.

Childbirth Education

These classes for mother and support person help to prepare you for the birth experience. The more you know, the better-prepared you will be for this intense, beautiful, scary, mysterious and glorious event! Topics covered include:

  • What is going on inside your body: the changes that are taking place, and why
  • Vaginal delivery, Cesarean section, preterm labor
  • What happens if you go over your due date
  • Breast and bottle feeding
  • Breathing techniques
  • Body positions that will help you through the labor and delivery process

Schedule:

Tuesdays from 7:00 - 9:00 PM for six consecutive weeks
Location: Coquille Valley Hospital

Course fee: $15 if you plan to deliver at another hospital; no charge for families planning to deliver at Coquille Valley Hospital.

Note: it is best to take this course when you are 7-8 months along in your pregnancy.

Smoking Cessation Classes

Let us help you kick the habit! Smoking cessation classes are offered at Coquille Valley Hospital at least once per year and on an as-requested basis. Our Respiratory Therapy department facilitates the classes using the American Lung Association Program. To sign up for classes, please call the hospital at 541-396-3101.

 


Diabetes Education

Diabetic education is vital for you to regain your sense of control over your life and to learn to live - well - with diabetes. Topics covered include:

  • Types of diabetes (Type I and Type II)
  • Treatment (insulin and oral agents)
  • Self-care procedures, including self-monitoring of blood sugar, diabetes control and complications testing, and diet
  • How to recognize
    • Hypoglycemia
    • Hyperglycemia
    • Diabetic Ketoacidosis
  • Long term complications
    • Retinopathy
    • Nephropathy
    • Neuropathy
    • Foot Problems
  • Miscellaneous Topics
    • Sick Day Therapy
    • Traveling
    • Glucose control during pregnancy

Diabetes Education is available both on an individualized basis or in small groups with similar learning needs. The advantage of individual instruction is that it can be tailored precisely to your learning needs and style, as well as conducted at a time that is convenient for you. The small group setting allows you to share experiences and learn from others.

Diabetes Support Group

Another place to turn for support and information is the Coquille Valley Hospital Diabetes Support Group. This informal gathering provides a forum for you to share your experiences, concerns and frustrations with fellow diabetics as well as supportive individuals from the community.

Schedule:

When: the second Thursday of each month, 2:00 PM
Location: Coquille Christian Community Church, 625 E. 10th St., Coquille

Alzheimer's Support Group

Coquille Valley Hospital sponsors the Coquille Valley Alzheimer's/Dementia Support Group, an outreach unit of the Cascade/Coastal Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. The group coordinator is Linda Stewart-Kalen, the pastor of the Myrtle Point Presbyterian Church. Facilitated by Shari Mortenson, the group provides ongoing support for local families and friends of people affected by dementia. The group also offers educational programs and information concerning services available in the area.

Schedule:

When: second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, 1:30 - 3:30 PM
Location: Myrtle Point Presbyterian Church, Social Hall
