Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system from iCAD, Inc.
There’s a new tool in the fight against breast cancer and Coquille Valley
Hospital is the First hospital in the area to offer it. What is it? The “Second
Look" system. Our facility is excited to announce the installation of Second
LookTM, a New Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system from iCAD, Inc. ,
which is approved for both screening and diagnostic use. It is true that there
are other technologies out there, but we are the First in our community to offer
the “Second Look” system to our county.
Why is CAD important in the detection of breast cancer?
Studies have shown that in recent years, the widespread use of regular
mammography screening has been a major contributor to improvements in breast
cancer survival rates. And while mammography has proved to be a powerful tool in
the fight against breast cancer, accurate reading of mammograms can sometimes be
difficult. Even the most trained eye can miss subtle variations in tissue that
may be of concern. The result is that 20 to 30 percent of cancers can go
undetected during the screening process.
That’s where recently developed technologies like CAD can help. “Second Look”
is a sophisticated tool that assists radiologists by providing a computerized
second review of mammograms, which helps to identify potentially cancerous
lesions.
The Second Look CAD system is based on the same breakthrough imaging technology
the U.S. military uses for automatic target recognition. Much like automatic
target recognition, which finds potential targets on a battlefield, Second Look
utilizes feature selection and mathematical formulas to identify suspicious
regions from mammograms.
By highlighting potential areas of concern for the radiologist, Second Look
calls their attention to certain subtle types of changes in tissue that may
indicate the presence of cancer. U.S. clinical trials, of approximately 9,000
patients performed at 18 leading medical institutions across the United States,
have shown that 26.2% of cancers missed by a radiologist would be detected with
the use of Second Look.
During National Radiologic Week and with emphasis on highlighting National
Breast Cancer Awareness, The Medical Imaging Department held an Open House and
High Tea on November 11th which allowed us to give tours of the department and
answer questions. For more information and photos - please download the pdf ad

The clinic expansion adds 4,887 sq. ft. of clinical space to the existing floor
plan plus an additional 2,619 sq. ft. of second floor storage. The new clinical
space will provide ten additional exam rooms for a clinic total of twenty-five;
space for three more practitioner's offices for a total of ten and a spacious
new procedure room for a total of three. It also includes improvements in the
clinic's imaging area, waiting area, staff space, and restrooms. Two of the new
exam rooms will be large enough for more complicated exams and minor procedures.
The total square footage of the Coquille Clinic after the addition will be
15,809 sq. ft. Additional parking will also be provided.

Construction Plans
Planning for this addition began several years ago, but remained dormant as the
hospital built up the financial resources to complete the project. It became
increasingly clear that the project was needed to improve and enhance existing
operations, but even more importantly, will provide capacity for additional
practitioners to meet the growing and future needs for medical professional
(physician) services in the Coquille Valley region.

Dr. Brazer with Construction Plans
Construction costs are estimated at $1.3 million with additional expenses for
equipment and furnishings for a total project cost of $1.5 million. The
expansion is underwritten by a combination of tax-exempt financing through
Umpqua Bank and funds provided from hospital operations, including the
refinancing and pay-off of existing debt of approximately $710,500 from the
USDA.
Plans were developed by the architectural firm of H.G.E. Inc. of Coos Bay,
Joseph Slack principle architect. R.E. Noah and Co., general contractor, was the
successful low bidder for construction. Appraisals were provided by Marineau
Associates and the environmental assessment was completed by Koos Environmental,
both also from Coos Bay. The hospital board and administration would like to
express appreciation to the physicians and staff of the Henry A. Dotter Jr.
Coquille Medical Offices for their assistance in the design-development process,
particularly the managerial staff: Gail Heidel, Marce Knight, Rhonda Leep and
Ann Ryan.

The majority of the work done in August will be excavation and earth moving. If
all goes well, the external walls will be buttoned-up by November and completion
of the project is expected in early spring. Primary care physicians currently
officed in the clinic are James Sinnott M.D., John Brazer M.D., and Nancy Keller
M.D. and specialty physicians Shiraz Farooq, M.D., General Surgeon; Michael
Ivanitsky M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon; and visiting specialists. An appointment
with any of these practitioners can be made by calling 396-3111. There will be
no interruption of service during construction.
