CVH Respiratory Therapy Program Receives 2nd Award

April 13, 2011, COQUILLE, ORE. – Coquille Valley Hospital has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) under the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). It is a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of respiratory care services available in hospitals.

About 700 hospitals, or approximately 15% of hospitals in the United States, have received this award. This is CVH’s second consecutive year to receive this designation under the direction of Rusty Knight, RRT.

The QRCR program was started by the AARC in 2003 to help consumers identify those facilities using qualified respiratory therapists to provide respiratory care. Hospitals earning the QRCR designation ensure patient safety by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services.

To qualify for the recognition, Coquille Valley Hospital provided documentation showing it meets the following criteria:
• All respiratory therapists employed by the hospital to deliver bedside respiratory care services are either legally recognized by the state as competent to provide respiratory care services or hold the CRT or RRT credential.
• Respiratory therapists are available 24 hours.
• Other personnel qualified to perform specific respiratory procedures and the amount of supervision required for personnel to carry out specific procedures must be designated in writing.
• A doctor of medicine or osteopathy is designated as medical director of respiratory care services.
• Hospital policy prohibits the routine delivery of medicated aerosol treatments to multiple patients simultaneously. A circumstance under which this practice is permitted is defined by policy.
• Use a process that periodically compares performances of your respiratory department on efficiency and quality metrics with similar departments for the purpose of identifying and achieving best practice.

Respiratory Therapists are specially trained healthcare professionals who work under physician’s orders to provide a wide range of breathing treatments and other services to people with lung-related conditions. They also care for premature infants and are key members of lifesaving response teams charged with handling medical emergencies.

The AARC is a membership organization representing more than 46,000 health professionals involved in respiratory care nationwide.

The full 2011 list of QRCR hospitals will be posted April 15, 2011 at http://www.yourlunghealth.org/basic_information/quality_providers/index.cfm

CVH Breaks Ground on New Replacement Hospital

Services Accessible During Construction at CVH

Dec. 13, 2010, COQUILLE, ORE. – Construction has begun on Coquille Valley Hospital’s new facility. All services will continue to be accessible during the project with the hospital taking steps to minimize any inconvenience during construction.

The replacement hospital is being built adjacent to the existing facility and will retain and expand programs currently offered at Coquille Valley Hospital. The project plans include a three-story, 60,000 sq. ft. facility with 9,000 sq. ft. of covered parking.

The hospital was recently approved for mortgage insurance through the Federal Housing Administration’s (FHA) Section 242 Hospital Mortgage Insurance Program to fund construction of the new facility. FHA’s Section 242 Mortgage Insurance Program for Hospitals provides HUD-insured mortgages made by private lending institutions to finance construction or renovation of acute care hospitals. Coquille Valley Hospital has also applied to qualify the project under the Build America (economic stimulus) program.

Construction and design are being provided by The Neenan Company, a Colorado-based design/build firm, which has been providing integrated design in the healthcare environment for more than 20 years. The new Coquille Valley Hospital is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2012.
