Colonoscopy & Endoscopy

At Coquille Valley Hospital, we believe that providing gastrointestinal screening procedures is an essential investment in our rural community’s health. We offer a high level of care through high-quality colonoscopy and endoscopy testing to provide answers needed to advance patient care – all close to home. Typically, a referral from your primary care provider is needed to perform these exams. To schedule an appointment with a primary care provider, please contact us.

Colonoscopies & Endoscopies

Colonoscopies

During a colonoscopy, your provider will look at your rectum and colon using a colonoscope. A scope is a flexible tube with a camera that allows your provider to see the causes of specific symptoms – pain in your abdomen, changes in your bowel movements, etc. The scope is also important to screen for early stages of diseases, such as colorectal cancer. When discovered at an early stage, diseases can benefit from early diagnosis and treatment.

Colonoscopy Preparation
Preparations for a colonoscopy can differ from patient to patient, so please follow your provider’s instructions. In general, you can expect to eat a special diet a few days before the procedure, then follow specific instructions to clean out your bowels. A colonoscopy requires you to be under anesthesia, so please arrange for someone to drive you to and from your procedure.

Endoscopies

During an endoscopy, your provider will look at your upper gastrointestinal tract with an endoscope. The endoscope is a flexible tube with a camera that allows your provider to see the lining and inside surfaces of your esophagus, stomach and duodenum, which is the first part of your small intestine. Using the endoscope, your provider will be able to identify certain health conditions and diseases. Some common examples are gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), celiac disease or the early stages of cancer.

Endoscopy Preparation
Preparations for an endoscopy can differ from patient to patient, so please follow your provider’s instructions. In general, you can expect to not eat or drink anything for several hours before the procedure. An endoscopy requires you to be under anesthesia, so please arrange for someone to drive you to and from your procedure.
