Meet Dr. Simmonds

Growing up in the small town of Lubec, Maine, Dr. Veronica Simmonds was often the one who had to tend to the wounds of her accident-prone brothers, she says.

“My mother fainted at the sight of blood, so it was me putting pressure on wounds and calling the town doctor to ask what to do. He always joked that I would put him out of business.”

By the time she was 15, Dr. Simmonds knew she was headed down the right career path, first pursuing her assistant nursing certification through vocational school, then attending Wellesley College to study biology.

“I put myself through college,” she says. “It took me 10 years to pay off my college debt before I entered medical school.”

During that time, Dr. Simmonds performed a number of jobs, including being a commercial fisher and driving a UPS truck. These types of jobs taught her how to relate to people of all walks of life, she says.

She enrolled in a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at the age of 32 and focused on her passion, women’s care, specializing in OB-GYN.

As a practicing gynecologist, Dr. Simmonds specializes in treating prolapsed bladders and incontinence. She is a skilled laparoscopic surgeon.

“I enjoy giving women their lives back! Prolapse and incontinence are very detrimental to maintaining an active lifestyle.”

Dr. Simmonds also understands the importance of supporting women going through cancer treatment.

In her free time, Dr. Simmonds loves to travel and participate in medical missions. She has done quite a bit of fly fishing through the years, too.
